The Mystery of QR Codes on Munich Graves Has Finally Been Solved
In December 2024, visitors to several cemeteries in Munich began noticing small QR code stickers attached to selected gravestones, creating perhaps the most unexpected example of a digital business card. The stickers appeared at Waldfriedhof, Sendlinger Friedhof, and Friedhof Solln.

The company was responsible for cleaning and restoring gravestones. As part of the maintenance process, stones were removed, transported to the company's workshop, cleaned, polished, and then returned to their original locations.
The QR codes served as internal tracking labels. They allowed employees to identify which gravestones had already been serviced, who they belonged to, and where they needed to be returned.
According to Zanker, a large company requires a reliable organizational system to ensure that every stage of the maintenance process runs efficiently.
Why the Situation Escalated
The idea of using QR codes was practical. They helped speed up maintenance work, reduce confusion, and prevent the same gravestone from being restored twice.
The problem was not the technology itself but the lack of communication. The stickers contained no company logo, explanatory text, or any indication of who had placed them.
As a result, what was simply an internal tracking system was mistaken for an anonymous and suspicious activity. Cemetery administrators removed the stickers, visitors spread rumors, and police opened an investigation.
How the Situation Could Have Been Avoided
The company could have avoided the controversy by coordinating the project with cemetery management before installing the QR codes.
Adding the company's logo, name, or a short explanation stating that the stickers were being used for maintenance tracking would have immediately clarified their purpose.
Another possible solution would have been to use engraved metal plates or removable identification tags that would not leave marks on the gravestones. Although more expensive, such an approach would have greatly reduced the risk of damage.
